Microsoft Security Advisory CVE-2019-1301: Denial of Service Vulnerability in .NET Core

Executive summary

Microsoft is releasing this security advisory to provide information about a vulnerability in .NET Core. This advisory also provides guidance on what developers can do to update their applications to remove this vulnerability.

Microsoft is aware of a denial of service vulnerability when .NET Core improperly handles web requests. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could cause a denial of service against a .NET Core web application. The vulnerability can be exploited remotely, without authentication.

The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the .NET Core web application handles web requests.

To install additional .NET Core runtimes or SDKs:

If you have a version of .NET Core less than 2.1.13 or less than 2.2.7, you're vulnerable.

How do I fix the issue?

To fix the issue please install the latest version of .NET Core. If you have multiple versions of .NET Core installed you will need to install multiple runtimes, or SDKs depending on what you have installed.

• For machines running .NET Core 2.1, you should download Runtime 2.1.13 or SDK 2.1.509 for Visual Studio 2017 or SDK 2.1.606 for Visual Studio 2019 (v16.0) or SDK 2.1.802 for Visual Studio 2019 (v16.2) from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/2.1.
• For machines running .NET Core 2.2, you should download Runtime 2.2.7 or SDK 2.2.109 for Visual Studio 2017 or SDK 2.2.206 for Visual Studio 2019 (v16.0) or SDK 2.2.402 for Visual Studio 2019 (v16.2) from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-core/2.2.

If you have both 2.1 and 2.2, you need to install updates for both versions.

Once you have installed the updated runtime or SDK, restart your apps for the update to take effect.

If you have pinned your application to a specific version of the runtime, you must update your app, recompile and redeploy it for the update to take effect.
