Problem:

Scan Engine 8.500 may have caused some critical issues to your environment. Because of this, we will be releasing a new version (8.550-1001) that will be uploaded to our ActiveUpdate server on 30 October 2007. This article lists the issues resolved by the new version.

Solution:

Issues resolved by Scan Engine 8.550.1001:

1. Buffer overflow vulnerability in the scan engine

Hackers may exploit this vulnerability to attack users' computers. This vulnerability has been addressed in the new release.

Related Information:

2. System map view feature conflicts with other software that also utilizes the system map view resource

This issue may cause other software not to function correctly. Because of this, the feature has been disabled by default in the new release.

To manually enable the system map view feature:

1.

Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

Important: Always make a back up copy of the whole registry before making any modifications. Incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system problems.

2.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VSapiNt\Parameters key.

3.

Add a new DWORD value called "EnableSystemView" then assign it a value of "1".

4.

Restart the scan engine services for the new setting to take effect.

3. Citrix/Terminal server performance issue

Server performance will drop dramatically because the close table entry is too big.

4. The ClearCase issue conflicts with the Citrix problem

Because of Issue #3, the ClearCase fix is disabled by default.

To manually enable the ClearCase fix:

1.

Open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

Important: Always make a back up copy of the whole registry before making any modifications. Incorrect changes to the registry can cause serious system problems.

2.

Go to either of the following registry hives:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TmPreFilter\Parameters

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TmPreFlt\Parameters

3.

Add a new DWORD value called "DevObjStackCheck" and assign it a value of "1".

4.

Restart the server for the new setting to take effect.
