A study of the productivity of software programmers shows the most
talented coders to be over 100 times more efficient than the meanest. It
is clear, however, that there is nowhere near a commensurate increase in
pay.

[001] - Astaro Security Linux 5.816 (Beta)
  by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
  Sat, May 21st 2005 03:11

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Astaro Security Linux is an all-in-one network security gateway
that includes a firewall, intrusion protection, virus protection, spam
protection, URL filtering, and a VPN gateway. Features include stateful
packet inspection, deep packet filtering, application-level intrusion
detection, content filtering, virus detection for email traffic (SMTP and
POP3) and Web traffic (HTTP), whitelists and blacklists, IPSec and PPTP
VPN tunneling, spam blocking, logging and reporting. The software is built
on an embedded, especially hardened Linux distribution. The WebAdmin tool
and Up2Date service make it easy to install, manage, and update all six
security applications.

Changes: This version added support for multiple PPPoE interfaces, which
are configurable in WebAdmin and eDirectory Support. Many bugs were fixed.

[002] - Bist beta-0.3
  by cage_20 (http://freshmeat.net/users/cage_20/)
  Sat, May 21st 2005 07:32

Scientific/Engineering :: Chemistry

About: Bist stands for "bidimensional structures" and is a chemical
drawing tool. It is focused on organic chemistry, but it may be useful for
chemists or teachers as well. Bist support many of the formalisms used to
describe molecular structures like single bond, double bond,
stereospecific bond, charges, resonance arrows, lone pairs, and so on. It
can export both PostScript and PNG formats.

Changes: This release adds an improved GUI, acceptance of many new types
of file formats (via openbabel), a plugin system, a lot of bugfixes, a
script to make a Debian package that should work, and a logo.

[003] - Browsershots 0.2.1

  Sat, May 21st 2005 15:15

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Browsers
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Capture :: Screen Capture

About: Browsershots is a system for automatically capturing screenshots of
Web pages in a variety of browsers and making these images available to the
public. Its goal is to make it easier to test the compatibility of Web
pages with a variety of browsers. The system distributes the work of
making screenshots among community members. Anyone can add URLs to the job
queue on a central server.

Changes: Two critical bugs were fixed. The first bug prevented
uncompressed image files in /tmp/ from being deleted. The second bug
prevented browser chrome from being found sometimes because of an
incorrect file seek. New features include a search box to find jobs by URL
and automatic VNC server restart. Some other small code improvements were
made.

[004] - cgdb 0.5.2
  by Robert Rossi (http://freshmeat.net/users/bobbybrasko/)
  Sat, May 21st 2005 21:49

Software Development :: Debuggers

About: cgdb is a lightweight, but fully functional curses frontend to gdb.
The goal of cgdb is to be lightweight and responsive, not encumbered with
unnecessary features. The interface retains the familiar GDB text-based
interface with 100% of the original functionality. The interfaces also
provide additional features, such as a source code window, shortcut keys,
visual setting of breakpoints, regex searching capabilities, and more.

Changes: Besides some autoconf/automake updates, this release fixes a
major bug in CGDB that appeared on most OSes besides Linux where CGDB
would hang on startup while trying to read input from stdin.

[005] - CRM114 Discriminator 20050518
  by Crah the Merciless (http://freshmeat.net/users/wsymerlcom/)
  Sat, May 21st 2005 08:35

Communications :: Email
System :: Logging
System :: Monitoring

About: CRM114 is a Controllable Regex Mutilator and Smart Filter, designed
for easy creation of filters for things like incoming email redirection,
spam filtering, system logs, or monitoring processes. Filtering rules can
be either hard-coded (such as regexes), soft-coded (calculated at runtime
or read from an external file or process), or learned dynamically by
phrase matching (by SBPH hashing or Markovian matching, or Winnowing).
This makes it possible to create very accurate filters with very little
actual work. Accuracies over 99.9% are achievable.

Changes: This is a documentation release; a draft PDF of the book CRM114
Revealed (.pdf.gz, 240 pages) is now available for download. BlameMercury
has lots of bugfixes and only three extensions. You can now demonize
minions onto pipes, re-execute failing commands from a TRAP finish, and
use a regex directly as a var-restriction subscripting action, so [
:my_var: /abc.*xyz/ ] gets you the matching substring in :my_var:.
Var-restriction matches do not change the "previous MATCH" data on a
variable.

  by tof (http://freshmeat.net/users/cvollrath/)
  Sat, May 21st 2005 14:37

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: GvTags is a Groovy tag library. It allows writing Web applications
with Java ServerPages (JSP) in Groovy. It might be for the Groovy
programming language what the combination of JSTL and Struts is for Java.
You can use Groovy objects in a JSP as beans. It is possible to embed
Groovy code in a JSP. It also includes logic tags that use Groovy as their
expression language. It uses the GroovyScriptEngine, which ensures
automatic recompilation of Groovy code in GvTags pages and of external
Groovy classes. It caches compiled Groovy classes and makes execution
quite fast.

Changes: GvTags now has more the twenty tags. This makes it complete
enough to write most Web applications. New tags include elsif, switch,
case, default, import, and actionbean. GvTags comes with a set of
extensive examples, which show how to build Web applications in Groovy.
New examples include an address database and a memory monitor.
Improvements were made in the groovy scriptlet engine.

About: StringParser_BBCode is a PHP class that parses BBCodes with a real
parser and not just regular expressions. This ensures that the HTML
elements are correctly nested. It does not define any special codes, but
allows the programmer to do so herself. It provides many features, such as
the automatic detection and handling of paragraphs and the ability to apply
different so-called parser functions to different portions of the text that
is to be parsed.

Changes: Support for specifying multiple "usecontent?" parameters was
added. A small bug in paragraph handling was fixed. This bug caused two
directly adjacent inline elements to be separated by a paragraph.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: XMMS2 is a redesign of the XMMS music player. It features a
client-server model, allowing multiple (even simultaneous!) user
interfaces, both textual and graphical. All common audio formats are
supported using plugins. On top of this, there is a flexible media library
to organize your music.

Changes: The target audience for this release is developers, since the
player is not yet ready for public consumption or for replacing XMMS1,
RythmBox, AmaroK, or MPD. This simply means that the codebase is very nice
and developers are encouraged to help with creating plugins and clients. At
this point, there are no mature and stable GUI clients, but this preview is
released in the hope that the development of interfaces will accelerate.
